I Attended A Wonderful Jazz Concert At Prince George s...

On March 30th, 2017 I attended a wonderful jazz concert at Prince George’s Community College. The concert was performed by a group titled The Reginald Cyntje Group. The Reginald Cyntje Group was comprised of five talented musicians: Herman Burney, Reginald Cyntje, Lenny Robinson, Brian Settles, and Hope Udobi. The group performed a song cycle of seven songs: â€Å"The Rise of the Protester,† â€Å"Ballad for the Masses,† â€Å"Chant of the Revolt,† â€Å"Descension and Ascension,† â€Å"No Justice No Peace,† â€Å"The Piece of Resistance,† and â€Å"Blues People vs the Deplorables.† The piece titled â€Å"The Piece of Resistance,† my favorite song from the recital, and will be the focus of my concert report. â€Å"The Piece of Resistance† was performed, by Robinson playing drums,†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"The Piece of Resistance† had a steady beat and syncopated rhythm. This piece also is also in q uadruple meter, as jazz usually is. I would indicate the tempo as vivace because the song sounds very lively. â€Å"The Piece of Resistance† also has periods of slight accelerando and slight ritardando. Cyntje’s trombone had a relatively low pitch which greatly affected the tone color of the song. The dynamics of the piece was a combination of mezzo forte and forte. The dynamics kept changing due to the slight diminuendo of loudness during a portion of the song. In addition to the elements of music, musical concepts such melody, harmony, and texture are also important to â€Å"The Piece of Resistance.† The song’s melody was played in a smoothly, connected manner, which means it is best described as a legato. This smooth melody resulted in a consonance harmony in the piece. There is a distinct main melody played throughout the song played by the drums being accompanied by the other instruments. Ultimately resulting in the different sounds competing for att ention, which is a characteristic of the piece’s polyphonic texture. In my opinion, the members of the The Reginald Cyntje Group were very skilled and I would most definitely consider them to be experts of their instruments. It was also evident that they were very prepared and confident in their ability to play.
